Bay Area cites (starting with Alameda, Berkeley and Fremont) are adopting new regulations regarding soft-story buildings. Oakland and Hayward are likely to follow soon. The SF Chronicle reports scientists calculate a 99 percent probability that one or more of the major faults in the state will trigger a quake with a magnitude of at least 6.7. Earthquakes can’t be prevented but a seismic retrofit will greatly reduce the damage to your building.
